The Battle of Kulikovo

On September 8 1380 in a place called Kulikovo Field two armies the Russian and the Tatar-Mongolian clashed. What is the real contribution of the Kulikovo victory in history? For the historians of the past the importance of the victory at Kulikovo for Russian and world history was indisputable while in today''s historiography there is no unanimity and there are frankly contradictory views. However leaving aside all the doubts and skepticism of some historians it can be stated with certainty that it really was the first step towards the liberation of the Russians and their consolidation as a modern nation.
