About The Book

The Book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and serves as a continuation of the narrative of the Israelites' journey through the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt. Named for the two censuses of the Israelite people that occur within its pages Numbers recounts the challenges and experiences faced by the Israelites as they wander toward the Promised Land. The book opens with a detailed census of the tribes of Israel establishing the organization of the community and the roles of the Levites in the worship of God. As the narrative unfolds Numbers describes various events including the Israelites' complaints about their circumstances their disobedience and the consequences that follow. Notably the book recounts the sending of twelve spies into Canaan to assess the land where ten of the spies return with a negative report that leads to widespread fear and rebellion among the people. This lack of faith results in God declaring that the current generation will not enter the Promised Land leading to forty years of wandering in the wilderness.
