Fourteen years before The Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum published this, his first book. It is a treatise on breeding standards and tips for the raising of Hamburg chickens, a species that fascinated Baum. And while it is certainly an interesting curiosity for those interested in Baum's body of work, it also stands the test of time as a piece of lovely and insightful work on the raising of chickens, of the history of this particular breed, and of the mystery of its exact origin.
