Their original scoutmaster Dr. Philander Hobbs is called back home due to an emergency leaving Thad in charge. The group consisting of Thad Allan Giraffe Bumpus Step Hen and Davy is excited about the prospect of exploring the vast waters of Lake Superior. As they set up camp on the lake shore the scouts encounter various challenges and humorous situations. Davy Jones known for his daring stunts mistakenly believes he has seen a panther in a tree which turns out to be a large owl. The boys decide to keep the owl as a pet naming it Jim. The next day they reach the village where their boat the Chippeway Belle awaits them. Despite some initial concerns about the boat's engine the scouts set off on their cruise. However their journey is not without mishaps. The engine suddenly stops causing panic among the scouts especially Bumpus who jumps overboard in fear.
