In The Boy Scouts with the Motion Picture Players a group of five Boy Scouts from Oakvale embarks on an adventurous weekend hike to a mysterious and supposedly haunted castle known as Randall's Folly. Led by Hugh Hardin the assistant scout master the group includes Alec Sands Billy Worth Arthur Cameron and Monkey Stallings. Alec's wealthy and eccentric Aunt Susan has tasked him with investigating the castle as a potential quiet retreat for her providing funds for the trip and a high-quality camera to document the site. Upon arrival the scouts discover that the castle is indeed a grand but eerie structure surrounded by tales of tragedy and hauntings. As they explore they encounter signs of recent visitors leading to a humorous encounter where Monkey Stallings uses his ventriloquism skills to scare away two tramps who had taken refuge in the castle. The scouts decide to spend the night inside despite the unsettling atmosphere. During the night Hugh is awakened by strange noises and bravely investigates discovering that the sounds are caused by a family of owls and some bats residing in a turret chamber. Relieved he returns to his friends and they continue their exploration the next day. Alec takes numerous photographs to send to his aunt while the group plans to camp outdoors for their second night. Their adventure takes an unexpected turn when two men in gray uniforms armed and claiming to have tracked the scouts confront them. The story leaves readers on a cliffhanger wondering about the true identity and intentions of these men and the fate of the scouts.
