As Hilary faces the challenges of captivity and uncertainty he must rely on his inner strength and determination to persevere. Mark Yates had been involved in the construction of a church in the secluded gorge a project that had brought the community together in a shared effort. The church represented the culmination of their labor and devotion a symbol of their commitment to their faith. The arrival of a new preacher had brought about changes in the community challenging old ways and inspiring moral resolve in the young people. The preacher's practical application of religion to daily life had stirred the residents leading to reconciliations forgiveness and a sense of order in the community.
