About The Book

The homestead of Zvomuya nestled deep in the heart of Zimbabwe's communal lands has always been defined by two things: the resilience of its sun-baked soil and the kraal where the ancestors' cattle once slept. In the Shona tradition the kraal is not just a pen; it is the bank the pharmacy the marriage counselor and the repository of a family's pride. When the kraal is full the family is whole. When it is empty the family is scattered.

This book is about what happens when the scattered come home for Christmas-a time of year meant for abundance but which for many African families has become the most financially precarious day on the calendar.

Our story belongs to Chenai and Blessed the elders of the Moyo clan who live in Zvomuya. For years they have carried the crushing weight of their empty kraal and the thin shame of their unpaid debts. Their four sons and one daughter have fled chasing currency across borders: to the factories of South Africa the construction sites of Botswana and the offices of Harare. They send money home enough to keep the lights on and the wolf from the door but not enough to heal the spiritual wound of their absence.

When they all return for the holidays bringing gifts boasting of successes and hiding their failures Chenai decides that this must be the year of the ultimate sacrifice. The great bull Chitonga-the last magnificent remnant of Blessed's former wealth and the last guarantor of their pride-must be slaughtered for the Christmas feast. It is a decision that forces the family to confront a brutal truth: the feast of reunion is merely a cover for the debt of blood. The cattle may be gone but the children have returned and they too are now a form of currency.

This is a story about the migration of love the true price of sacrifice and the unbreakable bond that insists against all economic logic that home is the only place where debt can truly be settled. It is a portrait of a family fighting to define wealth not by what they earn outside but by what they refuse to let perish within the gates of Zvomuya.
