<i>The Chicken Flicker's Granddaughter (The Nature of Love)</i> is based on the lives of three generations of women grandmother daughter and granddaughter how their ability to love was crippled by the act of the grandfather. It begins with the story of a young girl not yet fifteen driven from her home in a tiny Russian village by the Kishinev Pogrom forced to hide in the woods by day make her way at night eventually to arrange passage on a ship bound for Boston of a young man from Germany's Schwartzwald who dreamed of becoming a 'someone' in the new world how his fortunes rose and fell at a time when Boston was the vibrant center of America's textile industry of how the grandmother was forced to find work as a chicken flicker weeks before the birth of their fourth child of how that infant daughter spurned rejected later rejects daughter she gives birth to and how that daughter the chicken flicker's granddaughter struggles to break that loveless cycle.
