An American author of fantasy horror and science fiction Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He is renowned for fusing science fiction with horror aspects as well as for popularising ""cosmic horror""—the idea that some ideas creatures or events are scarcely understandable to human minds and that those who explore them run the risk of losing their heads. The ""Cthulhu Mythos"" a collection of loosely related fictions involving a ""pantheon"" of otherworldly monsters and the renowned Necronomicon a grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore were both written by Lovecraft a figure who has gained cult status in the horror genre. His writings frequently had a ""cosmic pessimistic"" tone viewing humanity as unimportant and helpless in the universe.
