About The Book

LARGE PAPERBACK. This book contains part of the voluminous work-related private correspondence sent to Sir Ernest Satow while he was Her Britannic Majesty's Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in Japan (1895-1900) from the Satow Papers held at The National Archives Kew London transcribed and published in full from handwritten originals with annotations for scholars and researchers. Some of the letters are from superiors at the Foreign Office and some from the Office of Works about buildings but most are from subordinates (Tokyo legation staff and consular staff at Hakodate Kobe and Nagasaki). A very few replies from Satow himself are included. This book offers a rare glimpse at hitherto unpublished material. Crown copyright material is reproduced by permission of the Controller of HMSO.
