The story takes place on May Day in the year 1851 and revolves around the lives of two families the Lanes and the Harts. The Lanes are a wealthy family who live in a grand estate while the Harts are a poor family who live in a small cottage nearby. The two families are brought together when the Lanes' daughter Alice falls ill and is taken in by the Harts to recover. As Alice spends time with the Harts she learns about their struggles and becomes determined to help them. Meanwhile a mysterious crystal hive is discovered on the Lanes' estate and the discovery leads to a series of events that will change the lives of both families forever.
