About The Book

After their father passes away Eugene Irtenev and his brother receive a sizable inheritance. However there are debts attached to the bequest so the brothers must determine whether or not to accept it. Eugene accepts the bequest and purchases his brother's share of the property in the hopes of selling off huge parcels of land while making improvements to the remainder. Eugene misses the relationships he had with ladies when residing in St. Petersburg as he works on the farm alone and with his mother. After asking about the community the watchman introduces Eugene to Stepanida a village peasant whose husband works in the nearby city. Eugene has been having encounters with Stepanida for a number of months paying her each time.
