About The Book

The Downfall centers on the experiences of Jean Macquart a soldier in the French army and Maurice Levasseur a young and idealistic man who is also conscripted into the army. Jean a veteran who previously appeared in Zola's The Earth (La Terre) represents the working-class down-to-earth perspective while Maurice who comes from a bourgeois background embodies the nationalistic and often naive enthusiasm that initially fueled the war. The novel opens as the French army prepares for conflict with the Prussians but it quickly becomes clear that the French forces are poorly led and unprepared for the realities of modern warfare. Zola meticulously depicts the disastrous campaigns focusing on the Battle of Sedan where the French army is decisively defeated leading to the capture of Emperor Napoleon III and the collapse of the Second Empire. As the war progresses Jean and Maurice's relationship is tested by the brutal realities of combat starvation and the crushing defeat that demoralizes the French troops. The narrative captures the chaos and disillusionment that follows the French losses as well as the devastating impact of the war on soldiers and civilians alike.
