The Drawings of Jerry Winick 50 Years

<p>If you had told me when I was a young boy growing up in Brooklyn New York that one</p><p>day my pencil drawings would end up in books museums private collections and in a</p><p>presidential library I would've just kept on drawing- too focused on my next piece to</p><p>believe it.</p><p>From the time I could first hold a pencilI was drawingtrying to capture the world</p><p>around me with nothing more than graphite on paper.</p><p>I've always been fascinated by the detail a pencil could capture. There's something</p><p>pure about it. No color to distract just light and shadowline and texture whether I'm</p><p>drawing firemen's coatsa stack of booksor a city sceneI try to breathe life into the</p><p>subject through the most subtle shifts of tone. People often mistake my work for</p><p>photography and while that's flattering it's never been my aim. My goal has always</p><p>been to show what can be done with a pencil- when you take your timeand let the</p><p>drawing unfold.</p><p>This book is a collection of drawings that span many years many hoursand many</p><p>memories. Some took weeks others months.Each one tells a story- not just of the</p><p>object or the scenebut of where I was in my life at the time.</p><p>Sharing this work means sharing a piece of myself. It means revisiting the hours I spent</p><p>hunched over the drawing board.It means remembering why I fell in love with drawing</p><p>in the first place.</p><p>In addition to drawingone of the greatest joys of my life has been teaching. At</p><p>Pencilworks Studiowhich I opened 25 years ago with my wife KarenI've had the</p><p>privilege of working with students of all ages. Watching someone go from hesitation to</p><p>confidence from sketch to finished piece has been incredibly rewarding.</p><p>I've always believed that drawing isn't about talent. It's about learning to see and</p><p>trusting your experience.</p><p>As you turn these pages I hope you'll see more than just pencil on paper. I hope you'll</p><p>see a lifetime of dedication to an art form I love and the joy I've found in both creating</p><p>and sharing that love with others.
