The book is a sequel to Orczys popular novel The Scarlet Pimpernel and follows the continuing adventures of Sir Percy Blakeney a wealthy British nobleman who leads a double life as a daring and enigmatic hero rescuing French aristocrats from the guillotine during the French Revolution. The story is set against the backdrop of the Reign of Terror and Sir Percy must use all of his wit and cunning to outmaneuver his enemies and save innocent lives. The book is known for its fast-paced action suspenseful plot and romantic subplots. It has been adapted into numerous films and stage productions and remains a beloved classic of the adventure and historical fiction genres.
