The Eve of St. Agnes is a narrative poem written by John Keats in 1819 and published in 1820. It tells the story of a young woman named Madeline who hopes to see her future husband in a dream on the eve of St. Agnes a night when it is believed that unmarried women can see their future husbands in their dreams. Madeline's family is against her love for her chosen suitor Porphyro and they forbid him from seeing her. However Porphyro sneaks into Madeline's chamber on the eve of St. Agnes and they share a romantic evening together. The poem is filled with vivid descriptions of the setting characters and their emotions and explores themes of love desire and fate.
