The following year he led a large army of crusaders to the siege of Toulouse. He next preached a crusade against the Saracens. He was then elected bishop of Acre approved by the Pope and consecrated. Later he again played a prominent role in the crusade; wrote his well known historical work; resigned his bishopric and devoted himself again to preaching the crusade against the Albigenses; was made a cardinal and bishop of Tusculum; and finally was elected patriarch of Jerusalem.
