Between 2003 and 2013 UNESP underwent two cycles of expansion which led to significant growth for the university. During this period UNESP underwent a process of expansion in undergraduate education which resulted in a 39.8% increase in the number of undergraduate courses offered by the institution. Like undergraduate programmes UNESP's postgraduate programmes also grew significantly over these ten years with a 36.1% increase in the number of master's programmes and a 44.3% increase in doctoral programmes. The growth in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes meant a 40.5% increase in the number of students enrolled at the university. However there has been no expansion of the teaching staff to match this growth as during this period there has been an increase of only 16.5% in the number of university professors considering both permanent and temporary professors. Given this situation the question arises: has the expansion of the university intensified the workload of professors?
