Brennan is a young and idealistic soldier but the war has taken its toll on him. He is tired and disillusioned and he begins to question the meaning of the war and why he is fighting. He also sees the horrors of war firsthand as he witnesses his fellow soldiers being killed and maimed. One day Brennan is wounded in battle and left alone in his foxhole. He is surrounded by enemy forces and has no hope of rescue. As he lies there dying he reflects on his life and the war. He comes to realize that the war is pointless and that he is dying for nothing. The story ends with Brennan dying in his foxhole alone and forgotten. It is a tragic story that explores the futility of war and the impact that it has on soldiers.
