The Golden Asse also known as The Metamorphoses is a novel written by the Roman author Apuleius in the 2nd century AD. It is considered one of the earliest surviving novels in Western literature and is known for its blend of comic and serious elements as well as its use of magical and supernatural themes. The story follows the adventures of Lucius a young man who is transformed into a donkey after dabbling in magic. Lucius travels through various parts of the Roman Empire and witnesses a series of comic and often bawdy misadventures. Along the way he encounters a range of characters including thieves sorcerers and lovers. The novel is famous for its depiction of magic and the supernatural including Lucius transformation into a donkey as well as his encounters with witches sorcerers and other magical beings. It also contains elements of satire social commentary and philosophical reflection. One of the most famous episodes in The Golden Asse is the story of Cupid and Psyche which has become a classic tale in its own right. In this story Psyche is a mortal woman who falls in love with Cupid the god of love. However their relationship is complicated by the jealousy of Cupids mother Venus and Psyches journey to win back Cupids love is full of trials and tribulations.
