The Great Gatsby is written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters living in the fictional towns of West Egg and East Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922. Nick Carraway a young bachelor who has just settled in the neighbouring cottage is intrigued by the mysterious host Jay Gatsby. As more and more people lose themselves to the lure of money ironically the only person who remains unaffected is Jay Gatsby the enigmatic host of the most extravagant parties. The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence idealism resistance to change social upheaval and excess creating a portrait of the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream. Set amidst the backdrop of the New York skyline this book tells an admonishing tale about the “American Dream”.
