Roughing It is a work of travel writing by Mark Twain that is loosely autobiographical. In order to serve as a precursor to his first travel book The Innocents Abroad it was written in 1870–1871 and published in 1872. (1869). He embarked on a stagecoach trip to the west with his brother Orion Clemens who had been appointed Secretary of the Nevada Territory following a brief term as a Confederate cavalry militiaman (not detailed in the tale).
