He embarked on a stagecoach trip to the west with his brother Orion Clemens who had been appointed Secretary of the Nevada Territory following a brief term as a Confederate cavalry militiaman (not detailed in the tale). Twain relied largely on his active imagination for many of the anecdotes in the book and reviewed his brothers diaries to refresh his recollection.
