The Grocer's Wives

This is a story of what happened after Tommy Badnell a young country ploughboy left Knowl Hill one day and walked along the Old Bath Road into Maidenhead via the dreaded workhouse. Tommy knew that he wanted to be part of a more comfortable world than the one he was born into but would it bring him happiness? Would his early years with his cruel peasant mother stop him achieving his dreams? The story of his life with the lovely Nellie (Helen) and her sister explains the title of the book; the people and events that shaped their lives make up the story which mainly takes place between the two world wars. It also shows how family love more important than heirlooms can be passed on through the generations and in old age that can be the most important thing of all.
