Jacob Abbotts The History of Charles the First is a biography of King Charles I of England who reigned from 1625 to 1649. The book details Charles life his reign and ultimately his downfall. The book begins with Charles upbringing and education and his ascension to the throne upon the death of his father James I. Charles faced several challenges early in his reign including conflicts with Parliament over taxation and religious policy. These conflicts eventually led to the English Civil War which lasted from 1642 to 1651. Abbott details the various battles and political maneuverings that took place during the Civil War including the rise of Oliver Cromwell and the eventual defeat of the Royalist forces. Charles was eventually captured and put on trial for treason which ultimately resulted in his execution on January 30 1649. Abbotts biography of Charles I is sympathetic to the king portraying him as a well-meaning monarch who was simply caught up in the political turmoil of his time. The book also emphasizes Charles religious beliefs and his commitment to the Church of England.
