Excerpt from The History of South Carolina Under the Royal Government 1719-1776<br><br>The revolution left the territory of the province of Carolina as originally formed in an anomalous condition. The settlement of the vatst domain granted to the Proprie tors by the charter of Charles II in 1665 had been ulti mately carried on with some success from two points to wit Albemarle and Charles Town the attempts at Cape Fear and Edisto having failed. While there had been no formal division of the domain into distinct territories these settlements at the two points had at first distinct govern ments and the northern portion had gradually acquired the informal designation of North Carolina; the southern that of South Carolina.
