The Homilies of St. John Chrysostom on the Gospel of St. John

About The Book

This set of sermons was delivered by St. John Chrysostom (347 - 407) when most likely he was a priest in Antioch which at the time was under the rule of the Byzantine empire. John Chrysostom is regarded as a saint both in the Catholic Western church and in the East where he is one of the Three Holy Hierarchs (along with Basil the Great and Gregory of Nazianzus). He would later go on to become the archbishop of Constantinople. However when his sermons were ill-received by the empress he was marched to his untimely death. The text for this book comes from the larger work The homilies of S. John Chrysostom on the Gospel of St. John by St. John Chrysostom (d. 407) edited by Philip Schaff (1819-1893) Oxford J. Parker 1848-1852. Illustrations have been added to this text from the people and Gospel events referred to in the sermons.
