Lovecraft and Rheinhart Kleiner visited the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn as well as the adjacent graveyard which is full of tomb markers from the mid-1700s which served as the inspiration for this very spooky short story. Lovecraft stole a piece of one of the grave markers while he was there which inspired him to consider the plot possibilities for a tale in which a vengeful tomb-denizen escapes from the grave to find the grave-robber after being enraged by a similar act of souvenir-taking.
