The plot unfolds as Julia is promised in marriage to the noble and handsome but morally flawed Manfred. Hugo deeply in love with Julia becomes consumed by jealousy and bitterness especially as he perceives that Manfred is unworthy of her affection. In a series of tragic misunderstandings and conflicts Hugo’s selflessness is contrasted with the selfishness of those around him. The tension between love jealousy and sacrifice is intensified as Hugo's actions lead to a devastating series of events culminating in his own tragic end. In the final resolution the true nobility of Hugo’s character comes to light and he is ultimately forgiven for his perceived wrongdoings. The Hunchback presents a moral message about the dangers of external judgment and the importance of inner virtue. It remains one of Knowles’ most significant works notable for its emotional intensity and exploration of human compassion in the face of societal rejection.
