The Indian Theogony: A Comparative Study Of Indian Mythology From The Vedas To The Puranas (Reissue) explores the triad of classical mythology in India. Indian mythology is based on the concept of a triad of gods. The three gods - Brahma Vishnu and Shiva maintain the balance of life and death. They perform the cosmic functions of creation (Brahma) preservation (Vishnu) and destruction (Shiva). Early students of Hinduism from the West were fascinated with the parallels that they saw between the Hindu trinity and the holy trinity in Christianity. The trinity of gods in Hinduism did not dominate the religion. This was unlike the gods one reads about in the Vedic pantheon. One can find parallels to them in Indo-European writings. Lesser gods have been assimilated by the higher triad of Hinduism. The attributes of these other gods have been absorbed and placed into positions of higher prominence that are represented collectively by the triad.Published by Cambridge University Press in 2008 The Indian Theogony: A Comparative Study Of Indian Mythology From The Vedas To The Puranas (Reissue) is available as a paperback.Key Features:The book explores the triad of Brahma - the creator Vishnu - the protector and Shiva - the destroyer.
