THE INFORMAL CAREGIVER OF THE PERSON WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA

Schizophrenia is a serious chronic mental disorder that produces a significant loss of functionality in the patient who suffers from it. Since the mid-1950s when psychiatric reform was introduced the family has become the main support and has been responsible for the care of the patient. These family members who dedicate part of their lives to caregiving are known as informal caregivers. This daily care exposes them to psychological physical economic and sociodemographic factors that influence the caregiver's burden and have a negative impact on the health of the caregiver and the person being cared for.
