These essays seek to describe the Jewish community in London at that time. The first is written from the perspective of an outside observer C. Russell whilst the second is written by a member of the Jewish community H. S. Lewis.The first essay by C. Russell examines the social industrial and religious questions arising from the recent large scale immigration of foreign Jews into England. It looks at what it perceives as the notable absence of state discrimination against Jews in England compared to the Anti-Semitic policies of many other countries. It addresses common British concerns about Jewish immigration. These include ideas about Jewish workers taking employment from British workers thoughts on high rents over-crowding and unsanitary conditions in Jewish East London and the notion that Jewish people are not integrating with British people. The second essay by H. S. Lewis is to a large extent a response to the first essay by C. Russell. Lewis speaks as a jew himself plainly and critically and challenges much of what Russel has asserted about Jewish people and Jewish East London.The Jew in London is a fascinating and unique volume which deserves the attention of historians and sociologists.
