The story is presented as a memoir written by Khan-li a Persian admiral recounting the discovery of the last surviving American Captain Ishmael Ingots who has been preserved in ice for centuries after a freezing accident. Ingots is revived and brought back to life in a futuristic world where Persia has become a dominant global power and the United States has long since disappeared. As the narrative unfolds Captain Ingots the titular Last American experiences the perplexing and vastly transformed world around him. He encounters various futuristic technologies societal changes and encounters with different cultures in a world very different from the one he knew before his frozen slumber. John Ames Mitchell's novel is a satirical commentary on American society politics and culture of the late 19th century as well as a speculative look at potential future advancements. The book offers a humorous and critical examination of societal norms and the potential consequences of societal and technological evolution.
