The Last Man by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley begins with an introduction set in 1818 Naples where the narrator and a companion explore the ancient ruins of Baiæ and the Cumæan Sibyl's cave. Adrian aware of Lionel's father's legacy extends friendship and support to Lionel offering him a chance to rise above his circumstances. This encounter marks a turning point for Lionel who begins to embrace a new path of intellectual and moral growth inspired by Adrian's example.
