<p><strong>The Last of the Mohicans</strong> is a <strong>historical novel</strong> by <strong>James Fenimore Cooper</strong> and one of the most famous works of <strong>American literature</strong>. Set during the <strong>French and Indian War (1754-1763)</strong> it is the second book in Cooper's <strong>Leatherstocking Tales</strong> series and focuses on the struggle between British and French forces along with the lives of indigenous peoples caught in the conflict.</p><p>The novel centers on <strong>Natty Bumppo (known as Hawkeye)</strong> a white man who has lived among the Native American tribes and has become a legendary figure. He is accompanied by his two Native American friends <strong>Chingachgook</strong> the last chief of the <strong>Mohicans</strong> and his son <strong>Uncas</strong> the last of the Mohican tribe.
