The Last Rebel is set during the final days of the American Civil War. The story follows the experiences of a young Confederate soldier who becomes one of the last rebels still fighting for the Southern cause as the war draws to a close. Through his journey the protagonist confronts the harsh realities of war loyalty and the shifting landscape of a nation on the brink of reunification. As with many of Altsheler's works the novel features vivid descriptions of battles detailed historical settings and a strong emphasis on character development. The protagonist’s internal struggle mirrors the larger conflict as he grapples with his identity and the future of the South in a rapidly changing America.
