Marek Zaczek is called upon by the impetutious but heroic French Marshal Michel Ney who leads his Sixth Corps north in search of food to forage. Soon they stumble upon the bulk of the entire Russian Army conducting a surprise winter attack. The historical battles of Eylau and Friedland are covered in detail as is the Peace Conference at Tilsit. Napoleon's continuing love affair with the beautiful young Polish Countess Marie Walewska is explored. After Tilsit Marek is drawn into an elaborate subterfuge and is forced to attempt to rescue his mother Magdalena from the clutches of an old foe imperiling Napoleon's newly established peace.</span></p>
