About The Book

The play satirizes the extravagant and excessive behavior of the French nobility particularly focusing on the absurdity of romantic ideals and the folly of those who pursue them. The plot revolves around two young lovers Alcippe and Angélique who are both nobly born and highly idealistic about love. The central comedic conflict arises when Alcippe despite his noble lineage is an overly passionate and exaggerated lover fixated on the grandiosity of his feelings. His counterpart Angélique shares a similar romantic fervor and together they indulge in an idealized and overly dramatic view of love. Meanwhile their relationships are complicated by their social circles who are equally invested in appearance status and ceremony making their love story seem almost like a grand performance.
