A WAKE-UP CALL I NEVER EXPECTED <br>It was a typical Tuesday morning. I had barely rolled out of bed when the pain hit me. A sharp stabbing sensation in my stomach made me gasp for breath. I tried to stand but my legs felt like jelly my head spun and a wave of nausea swept over me. I stumbled back onto the bed clutching my stomach; the ache was now turning into a relentless beating. I couldn’t remember the last time I felt this weak. As I sat there beads of sweat formed on my forehead; I realized this was more than just a bad morning. By noon I was a mess. My stomach pain had escalated and I felt like I was being torn apart from the inside. I was bloated my abdomen distended and every inch of my body felt drained of energy. My mouth was dry and no amount of water seemed to quench my thirst. I soon began to vomit violently until there was nothing left. By the time my husband found me I was barely coherent drenched in sweat shaking and too weak to stand. I was rushed to the nearby hospital. After that it became a blur of white coats needles and beeping machines. I was admitted immediately hooked up to IV drips and prodded for tests. Blood tests ultrasound scans endoscopies – some of them were so invasive and uncomfortable that I could hardly bear them. I lay in that hospital bed unable to move my mind foggy with pain and exhaustion. The doctors ran test after test trying to determine what was wrong. Five days passed in a haze of needles medication and the sterile smell of the hospital. The doctors finally pieced together my diagnosis: severe gastritis aggravated by stress and poor diet. My body was so worn out that it had simply given up. I felt a mix of relief and dread; relief that it wasn’t something more sinister and dread at the realization that I had done this to myself. How had I let it get so bad? I was a former school educator. I prided myself on being organized and disciplined. Yet somewhere along the line I had neglected the most important thing— my health. The experience was a rude awakening. The hospital bill was another shock – nearly one lakh rupees. As I lay there I thought about the days I had spent feeling so helpless. I wondered how many others like me were out there. Busy professionals juggling careers and families neglected their health. They had too many responsibilities. Now it has reached a breaking point. That’s when the idea for this book started to take shape. I realized that my ordeal was not just a personal failure but a lesson. I needed to share what I had learned – the hard way – about the importance of a balanced diet proper nutrition and mindful eating. I didn’t want others to go through the same pain and fear that I had experienced.
