The book is set in Surrey England during the 17th century and tells the story of a miller named John Childs who becomes embroiled in the political turmoil of the time. Childs is a supporter of the Parliamentarians and is involved in the Surrey Petition which calls for the removal of King Charles I from power. However when the petition is rejected by Parliament Childs and his fellow supporters are accused of treason and are sentenced to death. The book follows Childs' tragic journey as he is imprisoned tortured and ultimately executed for his beliefs.
