It focuses on the complex dynamics of their rivalry and the vicissitudes of its development in the work of both poets. Brodsky's meteoric rise to fame culminating in his emigration to America in 1972 and the 1987 Nobel Prize was marred by personal bitterness and wasted talent. In contrast Bobyshev who remained in the shadows for most of his life was later recognized for his enduring literary talent and his poetry (and prose) was ranked among the masterpieces of world literature by the best critics of the time.

The author believes that the richness of a text is not limited to what lies on the surface and that the source of the reader's pleasure is the introduction of one's own context into the text being read. Therefore the author's task is to encourage the reader to search for deeper meanings and to explore connections beyond the text. This style of reading the author believes creates a sense of discovery and intellectual engagement for both author and reader.
