The plot idea was inspired by Steve Spielberg's movie Close Encounters of the Third Class in which communication with highly intelligent alien beings is done through musical notes. In fact despite its impact the idea had no scientific basis. According to the author if there were extraterrestrial beings of advanced intelligence the appropriate language would be the musical notes produced by organic matter which they would undoubtedly know very well. Molecules molecules that vibrate and each vibration translates into a musical note it is a language that could expand beyond our galaxy.
