These previously untold experiences of Scottish soldiers in Prisoner of War camps in Germany in the First World War are made more intriguing by accounts of the use of a secret code to pass messages to and from the camps. The unlikely creator of this code was Duncan MacGregor an elderly Minister of the Church of Scotland in a small fishing village in Aberdeenshire. He was aided by his son Alpin one of the prisoners. As use of the code spread through the camps prisoners suffering great hardships and at real personal risk sent messages which were passed to the War Office.
