About The Book
Description
Author
The story is set in the late 16th century and follows the life of a young woman named Emily St. Aubert who is orphaned and raised by her loving and virtuous father in the south of France. After her fathers death Emily is forced to leave her home and travel to Italy with her aunt and her new husband Montoni who turns out to be a cruel and manipulative man. Montoni takes Emily and her aunt to his castle the dark and foreboding Udolpho where Emily is subjected to a series of terrifying and mysterious events. Emily meets Valancourt a handsome and charming man who becomes her love interest. However their relationship is complicated by the numerous obstacles they face including the villainous Montoni who tries to force Emily into a marriage with a wealthy nobleman. Throughout the novel Radcliffe uses vivid descriptions of the landscape and architecture to create a sense of foreboding and mystery. The novel also explores themes of love betrayal and the power of the imagination. The Mysteries of Udolpho was a huge success when it was first published and became one of the most popular and influential Gothic novels of the 18th century. Its popularity was due in part to Radcliffes skillful use of suspense and her ability to create a sense of terror and unease in her readers.
