The Story Is Set In A Small Town Situated Along A River With Locks Which Are Used To Control The Water Levels For Navigation. The Protagonist An Unnamed Narrator Becomes Intrigued By The Mystery Of The Locks And Decides To Investigate. He Spends Several Nights Observing The Locks Hoping To Catch Sight Of The Supposed Ghost Or Uncover The Truth Behind The Eerie Happenings. One Night While The Narrator Is Hiding Near The Locks He Witnesses A Group Of Men Engaging In Suspicious Activities. They Are Revealed To Be Counterfeiters Who Are Using The Locks As A Hiding Place For Their Illegal Operations. The Strange Occurrences That The Townspeople Attributed To Ghosts Were Actually The Result Of The Counterfeiters' Activities. The Narrator Gathers Evidence Of The Counterfeiters' Crimes And Informs The Authorities. With The Help Of The Evidence He Has Collected The Counterfeiters Are Apprehended And The Mystery Of The Locks Is Finally Solved.
