The Nephews is a five-act comedy by German playwright August Wilhelm Iffland first performed in 1806. The play revolves around the humorous complications and misunderstandings that arise within a wealthy family particularly involving the behavior of the nephews of the family patriarch Herr von Möller. The elderly von Möller has two nephews both of whom are eager to inherit his fortune but each one has their own distinct approach to achieving this goal. The play centers on their attempts to win their uncle’s favor using various schemes and tricks to gain an advantageous position which leads to both comedic and revealing situations. The central plot focuses on the rivalry between the two nephews who each vie for the affection and approval of their wealthy uncle. One nephew more cunning and manipulative employs deceit and flattery to win the old man’s attention while the other more honest but somewhat naive seeks to win the inheritance through hard work and virtuous behavior. The ensuing comedy arises from the contrast between their personalities as well as their interactions with other characters including their uncle’s friends and family. The play exposes the complexities of human nature particularly ambition greed and familial bonds through the humorous antics of its characters.
