Along the way they encounter various characters-some kind others cruel-while their health and fortune steadily decline. Meanwhile back in London friends and relatives search for them.</p><p>The novel contrasts good and evil through its vivid characters and ultimately ends in tragedy as Nell dies from exhaustion and hardship.
