I cherish the letters and as I read them I acquired a deep fondness for this man and I put a voice to the words and heard his voice. I cried when I read that his friend Dick died on the Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor. I sympathized with Arthur’s homesickness for his loved ones and the farmlands of the Midwest and missing his wife. I feared for Arthur’s life when he fought so bravely in the Battle of the Bulge as he wrote about the night in the Ruhr Valley with a battle taking place all around him.
