About The Book

During the voyage Grace develops a close friendship with Jason who is some years younger than she is. The narrator is attracted to Grace but he senses that there is something unsettling about her relationship with Jason. He also begins to suspect that Grace is not as happy about her impending marriage as she seems. One night the narrator witnesses a heated argument between Grace and Jason. He follows them to the deck where he sees them embrace. The narrator is shocked and confused. He does not understand what he has seen or what it means for Grace's relationship with her fiancé.The next day Grace is found drowned in the ship's swimming pool. It is unclear whether she fell or jumped but the narrator suspects that her death was a suicide. He is devastated by her death and he never learns the truth about her relationship with Jason. The Patagonia is a complex and ambiguous novel. It explores the themes of love betrayal and death. James never provides a clear explanation of Grace's motivations or of the events that led to her death. This leaves the reader to ponder the meaning of the novel and to draw their own conclusions.
