About The Book

This study carried out between May 2014 and May 2015 aimed to analyse the perception of sanitation on Mamangal Island in the municipality of Igarapé Miri - Pará in terms of access to and availability of basic sanitation services. To this end semi-structured questionnaires were administered to 215 households distributed among the five communities on the island in order to get to know the profile of the residents and the local sanitation conditions as well as field observations and physical-chemical and microbiological analysis of water samples both drinking water and river water. The context studied showed that there was no basic sanitation on the island. All those interviewed regardless of their level of education realised the problems with sanitation and their impact on health. 62% of the residents would like to see improvements in sanitary conditions 37% in public health and 1% in environmental awareness. As a result some suggestions were put forward for improving sanitation which should be made feasible in each community. In addition this final year's work will be made available to the island's community leaders and community health agents.
